Tardies

Being on time to class matters. Arriving late disrupts learning—for you and for others. You are expected to be in class on time for every block, every day. A student is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings. Tardies are tracked per block. Repeated tardiness adds up—and could impact your class participation, grades, and eligibility for extracurriculars. Plan ahead, manage your time, and do your best to get to every class on time.

Tardy Policy

Students are expected to be in class on time for every block, every day. A student is considered tardy if they are not in the classroom when the bell rings marking the start of the block. Tardies are tracked per block. Students marked tardy will receive a tardy detention, and students with more than 10 tardy detentions will be placed on Tardy Probation. Students who are on Tardy Probation lose social privileges, including off-campus lunch and participation in extracurriculars and events. For more information, see the Student Handbook.

Tardy Detentions

If you're marked tardy to class, a Tardy Detention will be added to your myETHS Tardy Tracker. Tardies take three school days to process, so if you're marked tardy on a Monday, it will show up in your tracker on Thursday. When tardies build up, it can feel overwhelming — that’s why ETHS offers many ways to help you clear them and stay on track.

Tardy Probation

Students marked tardy will receive a tardy detention, and students with more than 10 tardy detentions will be placed on Tardy Probation. Tardies accumulate until they’re cleared, and unserved tardies carry over to the next school year.

If you are placed on Tardy Probation, you can’t participate in or attend any school-sponsored activities or events that are not academic or required, until your tardies are cleared. This includes:

  • Sports practices and games
  • Dances (including Senior Prom)
  • Plays and performances
  • Club meetings and events
  • Non-academic field trips

Students in Grades 10–12 will also be placed on restricted lunch, which means you won’t be able to leave the building during your lunch block.

Notifications

To help you keep track of your attendance, ETHS will send email reminders when your number of tardy detentions reaches certain levels. These notifications are designed to support you, so you know where you stand and what steps you might need to take.

Notification When It's Sent
Detention Probation Warning When a student reaches 8 tardy detentions
Detention Probation Notification When a student reaches 11 tardy detentions
Detention Probation Reminder Every Friday if you have 10 or more tardy detentions
