Social Work Office
At Evanston Township High School, our school social workers are dedicated to supporting the emotional well-being and personal development of all students. As important members of our grade-level teams, social workers help students navigate social, emotional, and environment challenges that may impact their ability to learn and succeed at ETHS.
What is the role of a school social worker?
A school social worker is a licensed mental health professional who works in partnership with students, families, and staff to identify barriers to academic success and provide meaningful, individualized support to each student. Social workers are collaborators. Social workers at ETHS provide support in the following areas:
Direct Student Support
- Providing individual or small group counseling to support mental health and emotional regulation
- Provide crisis intervention and case management
- Support for students facing trauma, grief, major or urgent needs
- Support for students navigating issues such as bullying, identity, family changes, housing instability, and more
Partnering with Families
- Partner with families to create effective support plans
- Help families navigate school services, policies, and programs
- Gather insight from families to inform student support plans
- Connect students and families with mental health providers and school and community resources
Collaboration and Advocacy
- Advocacy for student needs within the school system
- Develop and implement plans for students with academic or behavioral challenges
- Follow up on concerns referred by school staff
- Coordinate prevention activities and intervention strategies to support a safe and supportive school environment
Social Workers
Our school social workers are assigned to specific grade levels. This allows them to build relationships and work closely with students and families over time.
When to Connect with a Social Worker
Every student has an assigned social worker who works in collaboration with their grade-level team. Students may be referred to the social work office by their counselor or students and families may request support directly.
Students may be referred to a social worker when:
- A student is struggling with anxiety, depression, or other emotional concerns
- There has been a major change at home (e.g., illness, divorce, loss, or move)
- They are having difficulty managing stress, peer relationships, or identity-related issues
- A family needs help connecting with community services or mental health providers
- They need someone to talk to in a confidential, supportive space
