LGBTQ+ Supports

ETHS recognizes how identity impacts student wellbeing, academic performance, and sense of belonging. The Student Services Department provides affirming, compassionate mental health services for LGBTQ+ students who are:

• Navigating identity-based stress or microaggressions
• Exploring their gender identity or experiencing gender dysphoria
• Facing concerns about dating, relationships, or friendships
• Managing challenging family or community circumstances
• Seeking guidance with the coming out process

Support is available through the student’s grade-level team, which includes their counselor, social worker, and psychologist.

Students are able to change their name and/or gender on school records without legal or medical documentation by submitting a Student Advocacy Form. Transgender and nonbinary students, by law and board policy, have the right to be addressed by the name and gender they consistently assert at school.

According to Illinois state law, to update official school records (such as the name or gender in the student information system), ETHS must have consent from a parent/guardian if the student is under 18.

If a student is ready to transition at school, they can expect the support of ETHS staff throughout the process. Transitioning is a personal decision, and families may choose to work with their grade-level team to create a Gender Support Plan based on their needs.

Students and/or their parent/guardian should complete the Student Advocacy Form to:

• Request a name and/or gender change in school records
• Share name, pronoun, or gender identity preferences
• Request access to gender-specific or gender-neutral restrooms or locker rooms

After the form is submitted, a meeting will be scheduled to:

• Discuss supports and accommodations
• Set a transition date
• Plan communication with teachers, if needed
• Update school systems (e.g. Student ID, email, class rosters)

Qrunch

Qrunch is a welcoming lunch space for LGBTQ+ students and allies, where they can find connection and belonging. Qrunch is held every day during lunch blocks in W112. For questions, please contact equity@eths202.org. 

Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

GSA is a student-led club that creates a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ students and allies to connect, support one another, and advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility and equity. All students are welcome to join. For information about how to get involved, contact studentactivities@eths202.org.

LGBTQ+ Summit

Student summits are day-long, in-school field trips organized by ETHS educators and students to create affirming spaces where students can build community, cultivate belonging, explore and develop their own understanding of identity, and discover pathways for healing and growth. Student summits contribute to an inclusive school culture, where all students feel visible, heard, and valued. Participants engage in meaningful conversations, workshops, and activities that foster dialogue, understanding, and connection. For more information, visit the Summits page.

ETHS provides access to gender-neutral restrooms and locker rooms to support all students’ comfort, safety, and privacy. These facilities are available to any student, regardless of gender identity.

• Gender-Neutral Bathrooms: Available on every floor of the building. Single-stall restrooms require a passcode for access. Students may request access by completing the Student Advocacy Form.
   
• Gender-Neutral Locker Rooms: ETHS offers gender-neutral locker rooms for students who request them. To request a locker in a gender-neutral locker room, students should complete the Student Advocacy Form.

As part of our commitment to inclusivity, ETHS prioritizes an inclusive curriculum that reflects the diverse identities of our student body. Our teaching materials and classroom discussions reflect the experiences, histories, and contributions of marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals. By incorporating diverse perspectives, we aim to create a learning environment where all students feel seen, respected, and valued. This approach contributes to a more empathetic and inclusive school culture, where students of all identities can see themselves reflected in their learning.
