Homeless Resources

Evanston Township High School is committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to education, regardless of their housing situation. Students experiencing homelessness have the right to enrollment, attendance, and success in school. If you or your family are experiencing homelessness, ETHS is here to support you.

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures the educational rights and protections of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Under this law, students who do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are entitled to specific support services.

Students may qualify for McKinney-Vento services if they are:

  • Living in shelters, transitional housing, or motels
  • Sharing housing due to economic hardship (sometimes called “doubling up”)
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, or other non-permanent housing
  • Unaccompanied youth (not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian)
  • Awaiting foster care placement

Rights Under McKinney-Vento

Eligible students have the right to:

  • Enroll in school immediately, even without proof of residency or documents like immunization or academic records

  • Remain in their school of origin, if it is in the student’s best interest
  • Receive free transportation to and from their school of origin (if eligible)
  • Access the same services and programs offered to all students, including meals, extracurricular activities, and special education
