World Language Placement Testing

ETHS offers seven World Language programs: American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Spanish/Spanish Language Arts. Students may select any language during the course request process for each school year.

  • Students with no prior experience in a language will be placed in Level 1.

  • Students entering ETHS with 2 years of experience at their current middle school will be placed in Level 2.

  • Students seeking a more advanced course should take the placement test.


World Languages Placement for Incoming Freshmen

ETHS will host remote World Language placement testing for incoming freshmen in October-November. Only students with non-traditional language experience (such as immersion programs, heritage speakers, or students who have lived abroad) will take a placement test.

If a student needs to take a placement exam after the November testing dates, please contact the World Languages Office at DeptChair_WorldLanguages@eths202.org to schedule an exam.

Placement Testing by Language

French, 
Spanish

Students with at least 2 years of middle school coursework in these languages will be placed in Level 2. 

  • 8th-grade students in Spanish Language Arts at Nichols, Chute, and Haven will take the AAPPL Spanish placement exam in their classes in early November. Scores will be used only to determine higher placement than the default placement of Spanish Language Arts 2.

For All Other Students
Students who wish to place higher in a World Language course must fill out this registration form. These students will take the AAPPL exam remotely between October 31 and November 14. This includes:

  • Students with special circumstances like those with study abroad, heritage, or immersion experience.
  • Students from Spanish-speaking homes who are not enrolled in Spanish Language Arts in District 65 and wish to take Spanish Language Arts 2, or higher. 

Placement Test
The placement test will be administered remotely using the AAPPL test. The test measures proficiency in:

  • Interpretive Listening

  • Interpretive Reading

  • Presentational Writing

The test is computer-based and takes approximately 1.5 hours. After signing up, families will receive detailed instructions, including technical requirements and test-taking tips.
 

Chinese,  German, Japanese, 

Students studying these languages will take the AAPPL test to measure proficiency. The test includes:

  • Interpretive Listening

  • Interpretive Reading

  • Presentational Writing

The test is computer-based, and all three sections take approximately 2 hours. After signing up, families will receive detailed instructions, including technical requirements and test-taking tips.

American Sign Language Students with ASL experience should contact the World Languages Office at DeptChair_WorldLanguages@eths202.org to arrange placement testing.
Latin
  • Students currently enrolled in Latin at Baker Demonstration School or Pope John XXIII School will be placed based on teacher recommendation and do not need to take a placement test at ETHS.

  • Students with Latin experience from other schools should fill out this form to provide background information about their language experience.
