Placement Testing

Placement testing helps ETHS learn more about each student’s academic strengths and ensure that every freshman begins high school in courses that best support their success. All incoming freshmen take placement tests for Mathematics, Humanities (English and History), Biology, and World Languages (if applicable). Results from the placement tests and current course enrollment are used to determine appropriate course placement for freshman year.

Course placements, including core classes, electives, and alternates, will be sent to incoming families prior to Course Request Night.

Placement Testing for All Students

ETHS uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test as one way to determine course placement in Math, English, History, and Reading for students new to the district. Additional testing may apply for World Languages.

Placement Testing for 8th Grade Students

All students entering Grade 9 at ETHS must complete placement testing. Results, combined with current course information, are used to determine appropriate freshman-level classes.

  • 8th Grade students enrolled at a District 65 school: Placement testing will take place at their District 65 school.

  • 8th Grade students enrolled at a non-District 65 school: Placement testing will be offered at District 202. To RSVP for a testing date, complete this form.

All incoming freshmen are expected to complete the placement exams before beginning at ETHS. These exams assess readiness in English, History, Reading, and Math, and if applicable, a content-specific World Language exam. Placement exam results, course performance, and successful completion of junior high school courses all factor into placement decisions for freshman-level courses.
