Protecting ETHS Students, Staff, and Families
Evanston Township High School District 202 remains committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that protects the rights of all students. ETHS will continue to serve as a safe haven for students and staff to the fullest extent permitted by law. We are fully committed to protecting the rights of all students to a free public education, regardless of immigration status.
In accordance with the Illinois Trust Act, the Evanston Welcoming City Ordinance, and the District 202 Safe Haven Resolution, ETHS:
-
DOES NOT ask our families about their immigration status.
-
WILL NOT release immigration status or related information in confidential student or staff records except in rare cases where there is a court order or parent/guardian consent.
-
WILL NOT coordinate with federal agencies or grant federal agents access to our facilities without a judicial warrant signed by a federal judge.
-
WILL NOT allow any federal law enforcement activities to disrupt the school’s learning environment.
ETHS is providing continued guidance to administrators and the appropriate staff, including Safety personnel, on student rights, protections, and protocols for handling any potential interactions with federal agencies.
Every Student Belongs at ETHS
Your child has the right to a free public education. All children in the United States have a Constitutional right to equal access to free public education, regardless of immigration status or the immigration status of the student’s parents or guardians. In the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court case Plyler v. Doe, the Court ruled that public schools cannot deny children a free public education based on their immigration status or their family’s immigration status. This decision protects every student’s right to attend school.
