Summer School

There are no excused absences in Summer School. Students should attend all days, including the full block on the last day of their course(s). 

Summer School operates a two-period daily schedule that covers 26 days. Summer School is divided into two 13-Day sessions; Session 1 and Session 2. Courses for credit can be taken in one of the following formats:

• 13-Day, 1-credit courses meet for two class periods each day from 8:00am-1:35pm. The schedule includes two 10-minute breaks, one during each period and a 30-minute lunch break. Students must attend a minimum of 12 days of class to earn credit. The last day of class is required.
• 26-Day, 1-credit courses meet for one class period, either 8:00-10:30am (1st period) -OR- 11:05am-1:35pm (2nd period). The schedule includes one 10-minute break during each period. Lunch is available from 10:30am-11:00am. Students must attend a minimum of 24 days of class to earn credit. The last day of class is required.
• 26-Day, 2-credit courses meet for two class periods each day from 8:00am-1:35pm. The schedule includes two 10-minute breaks, one during each period and a 30-minute lunch break. Students must attend a minimum of 24 days of class to earn both credits. The last day of class is required.

A student who is absent on the last day of a Summer School course will not be allowed to take the final exam and will receive a failing grade by default. Final exams will not be given early. No credit or refund will be given.
 

The District 202 Board of Education may award financial assistance for one (1) Summer School course to ETHS students who are eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program. Qualifying students must complete the steps listed on the Financial Assistance page. Counselors can provide ETHS students with information about financial assistance for Summer School. 

State of Illinois law requires school districts to have certain health information on file for students entering Summer School including verification of immunizations as well as physical and dental examinations. Students who are not in compliance with the health form requirements will not be allowed to participate in Summer School at ETHS until requirements are met. 

Visit the Nurses' Office webpage to view or download school health forms. Return the completed and signed Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination Form (Spanish) to the Nurses' Office (N121) by May 1. 

The school-based ETHS Health Center (H101) is available for exams and immunizations for eighth-grade students who will be attending ETHS. Contact the Health Center at (847) 424-7265 to schedule an appointment.

Most courses are structured to meet for 2.5 hours a day for 26 days in order to earn a high school semester credit. Some courses are structured to meet for 5 hours a day for 13 days.

Summer School Course Request Guide

• Academic Recovery Courses- All core academic courses required for graduation will be available to students who need to repeat an English, Math, History, Science, or PE course due to failure. All academic recovery courses will operate in a 26-Day format.
• Enrichment Courses- Eligible students will be invited to participate in reading, math, Extended School Year (ESY), and English as a Second Language (ESL) enrichment course opportunities. These courses will be offered at no cost to students. The format of these courses will vary. Registration for these courses will be completed by the enrichment program coordinators.
• Academic Advancement Courses- ETHS will be offering several elective course opportunities for students during summer school. Standard registration and tuition fees will apply to these courses. Please note that these are all courses that we anticipate being able to offer. Staffing availability and student interest will ultimately determine if these courses will run.

Eligible students will be invited to participate in free course opportunities, including Reading and Math in the Social Context and English as a Second Language. All other courses have a course fee and will require payment.

Recovery courses, advancement courses, and select Incoming Freshmen courses require a one-time, non-refundable $70 registration fee and the tuition fee for the specific course.

Summer School Refund Policy

Summer School classes will be canceled when there is insufficient enrollment. If a Summer School class is canceled, the student will receive a refund for the course fee. When the canceled class is the only course or program for which the student is enrolled, the registration fee will also be refunded.

In all other instances, the registration fee will not be refunded, even if the student withdraws prior to the beginning of Summer School.

Course fee refunds will be made as follows: if withdrawal from the course is on or before April 30-100% of the course fee will be refunded; May 1 through May 31-50% of the course fee will be refunded. No refunds will be issued after May 31. No refunds will be given to students who are dropped for disciplinary actions or exceeding the maximum of two absences, per Summer School attendance procedures.

The Nutrition Services Department offers lunch service to students who attend Summer School. An assortment of lunch choices are available each day in South Cafeteria. A full-price lunch costs $4.25, a reduced-price lunch costs $.40, and the same options are no cost for students who qualify for free meals. Students may also buy a variety of snack and beverages options during lunch. 

ETHS uses the SNAP meal payment system that enables parents and students to prepay for school meals and à la carte food items. All students attending ETHS Summer School are issued a Summer School ID on the first day of class. These IDs are automatically linked to a SNAP/Meal account. Students may use either their physical ID card or their virtual “myID” on a mobile device to pay for their school meals. Funds must be added to SNAP accounts for students with full price or reduced price meal plans. Parents/guardians can load money into a student's SNAP account through the ETHS Web Store. SNAP account information is secure and confidential. 

Note: All 8th grade students who qualified for free/reduced price meal plans in District 65 automatically qualify for free/reduced price meal plans during Summer School. Your student’s SNAP account is already active at ETHS.
