Special Education
At Evanston Township High School, we believe every student deserves access to a high-quality education that meets their individual needs. Through personalized instruction, accommodations, and targeted resources, students with disabilities receive individualized support that ensures access to grade-level content and state standards. Our Special Education Department provides services and supports that empower students to build essential skills for greater independence and meaningful post-high school opportunities. ETHS is committed to:
-
Providing equitable learning opportunities for students with disabilities.
-
Ensuring students access the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible.
-
Partnering with families and guardians to support student growth.
-
Creating inclusive environments where students can participate fully in school life.
What is Special Education?
Special Education refers to specially designed educational services—including instruction, supports, and related services—provided by public schools under federal law to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. Its goal is to ensure that every student can achieve academic success in the least restrictive environment appropriate for their individual needs. Special Education recognizes that diverse learners require different tools, strategies, and services to help them learn and achieve their goals.
Overview
How to Access Services
Navigating special education can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help. This overview explains how to access Special Education services. For more information, visit our online guide: Referral Process.
| Step | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Referral for Evaluation | A parent/guardian, teacher, or other staff member may refer a student for evaluation. |
| Consent for Evaluation |
A parent/guardian must give written permission for an evaluation to begin. Consent at this step is only for the initial evaluation. |
| Evaluation | The Special Education Department conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine eligibility and student needs. |
| Eligibility Meeting | Families meet with the IEP or 504 team to review evaluation results and decide next steps. |
| Plan Development | If eligible, an IEP or 504 Plan is created and implemented. Parental consent is required for a plan to be developed. |
Continuum of Services
The continuum of Special Education services at ETHS is designed to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. It offers a range of placements and supports, ensuring each student receives instruction tailored to their individual needs. This “continuum” of services means we can provide support in different settings—from general education classrooms with supplementary aids, to specialized programs, to more intensive options if needed. Whenever possible, we teach students in the least restrictive environment (LRE) so they can learn alongside their peers.

New Families: Transitioning to ETHS
Whether you're making the transition from middle school or joining us from another high school, starting at ETHS is a big step. Our Special Education Department works closely with families to make it as smooth as possible.
Our transition process is a team effort that involves:
- Students and their parents/guardians
- Teachers from the sending school and ETHS
- Specialized staff, as needed (such as speech-language pathologists, nurses, social workers, interpreters, or others)
- ETHS Special Education Administration
Incoming Freshmen
Each winter, ETHS hosts an Eighth Grade Transition Night for families of students with disabilities. This event introduces families to our programs, services, and resources, and provides an opportunity to meet key members of the Special Education team.
Transfer Students
Students with disabilities transferring to ETHS from another high school begin with the district’s enrollment process. Once enrollment is complete, the Special Education Department reviews the student’s most recent IEP, makes recommendations to the counselor, and works with them to develop a class schedule. If needed, the Special Education office may schedule a 30-day IEP review meeting to check on the student’s transition, monitor progress, and adjust services as appropriate.
