Driver's Education

Evanston Township High School offers a Driver’s Education program designed to prepare students for safe and responsible driving. The program includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training, meeting Illinois State Board of Education and Secretary of State requirements. Driver’s Education is a graded course and requires a fee for enrollment. It is available during the academic year and in summer school.

Eligibility

ETHS offers Driver’s Education in accordance with Illinois state law and district requirements. Below are the eligibility guidelines:

  • Students must be at least 15 years old by the first day of class to be eligible.

  • Students must pass 8 courses in the previous two semesters before enrolling, per Illinois law.

  • A valid Illinois Instruction Permit (learners permit) is required before beginning behind-the-wheel training.

Program Overview

How to Register

Driver’s Education at ETHS has very limited availability. Students who are interested in the course should complete the one-time application to be considered for enrollment. Submission of an application does not guarantee placement, as enrollment depends on eligibility and course availability.

To submit an application:

  1. Log in to your myETHS student account.

  2. Click the Driver’s Education tab at the top of the screen.

  3. Read the instructions carefully.

  4. Click Submit Application at the bottom of the page. Note: Your application will not be complete without this step.

  5. After submitting your application, make an appointment with your counselor to request the course.

Completing this process does not guarantee placement in the course. This is a one-time process, so there is no need to reapply.

Once submitted, the application is sent to the student’s counselor, who will review it based on Illinois State Law and ETHS requirements. Students will then be classified as “Requirements Met” or “Requirements Not Met,” and eligibility will be updated accordingly.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a seat in the class. Placement is determined by both eligibility and course availability. Each semester offers three sections of Driver’s Education, with a maximum of 8 students per section. Because space is limited, students should discuss course priorities and other options with their counselor.
