Sustainability

Evanston Township High School District 202 is committed to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility on our campus and throughout the community. Our efforts focus on reducing waste, conserving energy, and educating students about the importance of caring for our planet. In February 2024, ETHS became just the third public high school district in the nation to adopt a formal sustainability policy.

Our Sustainability Goals
Reduce Environmental Impact

Minimizing energy use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions across all ETHS facilities.

  • Eliminating 100% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with step-by-step goals of 45% emission reduction by 2030 and 80% by 2040.
Waste Reduction and Recycling

Encourage recycling, composting, and responsible disposal of materials to reduce landfill waste.

  • Becoming a zero-waste facility by 2045, cutting 50% of its landfill waste generation by 2030 and 75% by 2035.
Sustainable Practices

Incorporate environmentally responsible practices in transportation, construction, purchasing, and daily operations.

  • Sourcing 25% of cafeteria food locally, making 50% of meals from scratch and offering plant-based options for half of all meal choices by 2030.
Student and Staff Engagement

Provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in sustainability initiatives and learn about environmental stewardship.

  • Including sustainability and climate education in the curriculum and in employee training.
