Semester & Quarter Breakdowns

At ETHS, the school year is divided into two semesters, and each semester has two quarters. Each quarter is a period of time when a student's academic progress is tracked and assessed. For information about report cards and progress reports, visit eths202.org/grades.

Semester	A semester is one half of the school year. There are two semesters. The first semester begins in August and the second semester begins in January.
Quarter	A quarter is one half of a semester. There are four quarters. Quarters are also referred to as marking periods. Approximately halfway through each quarter, students receive a progress report, often called an Interim Progress Report (IPR) grade. At the end of each quarter, students receive a Report Card grade that shows how they performed during that time.

Key Terms

Below are some common terms you may see on the school calendar, along with brief explanations to help you understand what they mean and how they may affect your student’s schedule.

Break	A scheduled break when school is closed, such as Winter Break or Spring Break.
Conferences	Days planned for teachers to meet with parents/guardians about student progress. There is no school for students on Conference Days.
End of Marking Period	The last day of a grading period. This marks the end of that section of the school year, and report cards or progress reports are issued afterward to show how they performed during that time.
Late Start Day	A day when school starts later than on a regular school day. Late Start Days can be planned in advance or used in emergency situations, such as bad weather.
Early Release Day	A shortened school day where students leave earlier than on a regular school day.
Holiday	A holiday is when students do not attend school due to a federal holiday, such as Labor Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and President’s Day.
Non-Attendance Day	A day when students and staff are not in school.
Quarter	A quarter is one half of a semester. There are four quarters. At the end of each quarter, students receive a progress report or a grade that shows how they performed during that time.

Staff Institute Day	A day dedicated to professional development for teachers and staff, such as training, learning new teaching strategies, and collaborating with colleagues. Students do not attend school on these days.
